National soccer team’s new coach Hiddink comes to Turkey

16 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The Turkish national soccer team’s new coach, Dutchman Guus Hiddink, who replaces Fatih Terim, came to İstanbul yesterday.

Hiddink, who coached the Fenerbahçe soccer team about 20 years ago, expressed pleasure at being in Turkey again, at a press conference held at an İstanbul hotel accompanied by Turkish Soccer Federation (TFF) Chairman Mahmut Özgener.

While stressing that he has followed the recent discussions over Turkish soccer, the experienced coach said that the sport is supported by both the people and the government and that Turkish soccer will grow even bigger.

Hiddink also said that he had options other than Turkey but that it was not difficult to decide in favor of Turkey, adding that he trusts his instincts in making decisions and asks two questions: What the soccer perspective is in the country and how many people participate in efforts to enhance soccer in the country.

The Dutchman also said he talked to TFF head Özgener about which other names were considered for the post and he saw all the names were internationally acclaimed ones, showing how seriously Turkey took the issue. He also noted that he will soon start to work with the team.
