According to data released by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) yesterday, the first month of the new year saw a ramping up of industrial turnover, with the index 11.7 percent higher than January 2009 but 19.6 percent lower than December 2009. The decrease is consistent with the seasonal trends seen last year.
The mining sector turnover index, a subsector of the industrial turnover index, increased by 9.1 percent; the manufacturing sector index also rose by 11.8 percent in January compared with the same month of the previous year. The highest increase in the index was in durable consumer goods, increasing by 31 percent over January 2009. This was followed by capital goods with 18 percent.
On a more specific level, the highest increase was achieved in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers at 43.6 percent, followed by the manufacture of medical professional and optical instruments by 36 percent.
The sister industrial new orders index paralleled the turnover index -- increasing by 11.7 percent compared to the same month last year and decreasing by 19.6 percent compared to December.
