The family of late author and publisher Erdal Öz, the founder of Can Publishing House, launched the annual prize two years ago in memory of Öz, who died on May 6, 2006, at the age of 71. The Erdal Öz Literary Award is given to a living writer who has had a work published in the last three years. A 17-member selection board of writers decides on the award winner. The selection committee this year was headed by Cevat Çapan, a translator and professor of English language and literature, who told reporters on Monday at the Can Publishing House that Gürbilek winning the prize was living proof that “literary criticism is an area of creative writing just like novels, poetry and essays.”
Gürbilek will receive her award in a ceremony to be held on March 26, the anniversary of Öz’s birth, at the Pera Museum. The award consists of a cash prize of TL 15,000 and a statuette designed by sculptor Handan Börüteçene.
