Globalizing terrorism necessitates cooperation, Turkish General Staff chief

15 March 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, ANKARA
The head of Turkish General Staff said on Monday that globalization of terrorism forced countries to cooperate.

Speaking at the opening of the "Global Terrorism and International Cooperation Symposium" in capital Ankara, Turkish General Staff Chief Gen. İlker Başbuğ said terrorism was an inhumane and illegitimate act, no matter what its source, target or objective was.

Başbuğ said that terrorism, one of the biggest risks in today's world, was a great threat against human rights, common values of humanity, democracy and freedoms.

Noting that the concept of security globalized nowadays as well, Başbuğ said the new understanding of security covered a wider range of threats.

"The globalization of terrorism and its going beyond borders force countries to cooperate. Regardless of its source, target or objective, terrorism is inhumane and illegitimate. It is cruel," Başbuğ said.

"We should not give in to terrorism. We should burry our pain in our hearts and we should carry on with our fight in a determined way," the General Staff chief added.

Başbuğ said that terrorism could neither be supported, nor ignored.

"I would also like to reiterate that associating Islam with terrorism can only serve the political goals of global terrorism," he said.
