Gov’t reveals R&D incentive for SMEs

15 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The government has revealed its plans to introduce a new package to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to merge to receive research and development (R&D) support from the government.

Industry and Trade Minister Zafer Çağlayan discussed the details of the projected program in Ankara on Saturday. SMEs have to employ at least 50 people before they can receive monetary support for R&D from the government. The minister said SMEs would be encouraged to merge in order to receive government funding. Recalling that the government recently increased the amount of money allocated to R&D investments, Ergün said they expected to increase the share of R&D in the national income to 2 percent by 2013.

Following recent incentives, 76 SMEs applied to the Industry and Trade Ministry to receive R&D support. The ministry provided funding for 64 firms and gave them certificates. There are currently around 13,000 employees working in newly established R&D centers throughout the country.
