Galatasaray Cafe Crown on verge of relegation in TBL

The threat of relegation still looms over Galatasaray Cafe Crown despite its resounding TBL victory over Pınar Karşıyaka on Saturday.

The Galatasaray Cafe Crown beat visiting Pınar Karşıyaka 88-71 in their men’s Beko Turkish Basketball League (TBL) week 22 match at the Abdi İpekçi Sports Arena on Saturday.
Lithuanian small forward Simas Jasaitis, popularly known as Jaska, was instrumental in Cafe Crown’s victory as he banged in 20 points. US star Ryan Toolson responded with 15 points for Pınar Karşıyaka, but it was far too little to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

But despite this victory, Cafe Crown is still on the verge of relegation. As is known, the disciplinary committee last November imposed heavy penalties on the Cafe Crown basketball team for fielding suspended player Cemal Nalga by dressing him in the jersey of injured player Tufan Ersöz during two of the İstanbul team’s warm-up matches in Germany in September.

The committee ruled that Galatasaray Cafe Crown would lose by default the eight official games it had played so far in the season -- five in the TBL and three Teknosa Turkish Cup matches. Moreover, Galatasaray Cafe Crown would no longer be awarded the one point given to losers in the TBL.

The arbitration board of the General Directorate of Youth and Sports (GSGM) in January ruled that Cafe Crown should only lose by default the five league matches it had played. Galatasaray has hardly recovered ever since.

Two teams will be relegated from the 16-team TBL to the second division next season, and Cafe Crown is 13th in the 16-team league standings with 28 points after Saturday’s match. Unless Galatasaray continues winning, we might see the once “mighty” Cafe Crown in the minor division next season.

Other TBL results on Saturday: Bornova Belediyesi 79, Beşiktaş Cola Turka 88; Kepez Belediyesi 62, Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi 71; OYAK Renault 91, Türk Telekom 86; and Erdemirspor 86, Antalya Büyükşehir Belediyesi 73.

In the Women’s Turkish Basketball League (TBBL), it was: BOTAŞ Spor 81, İstanbul Üniversitesi 75; Tarsus Belediyesi 112, Kocaeli Büyükşehir Belediyesi Kağıtspor 65; Galatasaray 82, Çankaya Üniversitesi 63; and Samsun Basketbol 86, Ceyhan Belediyesi 92.
