Acclaimed Spanish novelist Miguel Delibes has died at age 89, officials said on Friday. Delibes, author of popular novels including “Los Santos Inocentes” (The Innocent Saints), published in 1981, died Friday at his home in the north central city of Valladolid around 7 a.m., Spanish National Radio said, citing his family.
Delibes had been fighting cancer of the colon for several years. A prolific author, Delibes’ work featured gritty depictions of rural life in post-civil war Spain. He was awarded the Spanish-speaking world’s top literary award, the Cervantes Prize, in 1993.
