13 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül has said Technopark İstanbul will be developed as one of the most distinguished research and technology centers in Europe.

Speaking yesterday at a signing ceremony in which the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), the İstanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO), Airport Management and Aviation Industries Inc. (HEAŞ) and Defense Technologies Engineering Inc. (STM) established a partnership to found a company to operate Technopark İstanbul, Gönül said there are currently 37 technology development centers in Turkey, 23 of which are active. About 1,200 firms with more than 12,000 employees operate in these centers, Gönül said, adding that they earn $600 million in export.

“We are planning to develop İstanbul Technopark as one of the most distinguished research, development and technology bases in Europe,” he said. The center has a great deal of both expert and financial support, Gönül also stated.
