Five Zaman photographers win Photo of the Year honors

13 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Five photojournalists from the Zaman daily have received awards in the Vakıfbank-Turkish Photojournalists Association’s Photo of the Year competition, the most prestigious photojournalism awards in Turkey.
The association announced the winners in a statement released yesterday. Among 1,267 photos submitted to the competition, 22 photos and one portfolio comprising 12 photos were awarded in categories including news, free photgraphy, sports, the environment, interviews and “the face of Turkey.” Zaman’s Onur Çoban was honored in the Free Photography category for his photo “Yalnız Adam” (Lonely Man), and Mehmet Ali Poyraz was awarded in Sports Photography for his photo “Motokros Dünya Şampiyonası” (Motocross World Championship). Zaman’s Mustafa Kirazlı received the Rafet Hüner Special Award for his photo “Bostancı’da Çatışma” (Clash in Bostancı), while Mühenna Kahveci was awarded an honorable mention in the Free Photograph of the Year category for his photo “Şemdinli’de Beyzbol” (Baseball in Şemdinli) and Selman Eştürker’s photo “Suda Çırpınış” (Flutturing in Water) received the Sport Photo of the Year award.

The Associated Press’s İbrahim Usta, a former Zaman photojournalist, won the top award, Photo of the Year, for his photo “İstanbul’2009,” which was taken when the floods hit İstanbul in September 2009.

While the jury did not find a photo worth honoring in the interview category, the Habertürk daily’s Sedat Suna received an honorable mention for his 12-photo portfolio of Mardin’s Bilge village, the scene of a bloody massacre in May 2009.

The awards will be distributed in May at a ceremony in Ankara.
