Zaman: “Such transport of bombs is unacceptable,” the daily said in the headline of its major story yesterday, reporting that the transport of ammunition belonging to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in a civilian vehicle and without security has led to concerns. Retired military personnel and experts on logistics said transporting ammunition in such a way was both dangerous and against regulations on the transportation of hazardous substances. A retired colonel, Nevzat Tarhan, said: “There cannot be any sound reason for carrying ammunition in city traffic in Ankara like carrying watermelons. Does the gendarmerie have the authority to do this?” An expert on logistics, Murat Erdal, said the vehicle was subject to regulations on the transportation of hazardous substances because it was a civilian truck, i.e., the driver of the truck should have had a certificate and a warning sign should have been hung off the vehicle to let other drivers in traffic know that the truck was carrying explosive material.Radikal: “Difference of civilization,” was the headline of the daily’s lead story yesterday, which reported that more fatal work accidents occur in Turkey than in Britain although Britain has 8 million more workers and its production is four times greater than that of Turkey. Fatal work accidents in Turkey are 20 times more than those in Britain, said the daily, citing data from the Labor Ministry. Labor Minister Ömer Çelik said although there has been a decrease in the number of fatalities at work in Turkey since 2003, this was still not something to be happy about. “Even worker’s death is shameful,” he added.
Taraf: O.S, a 16-year-old who was detained in the eastern province of Şırnak for attending an illegal demonstration, turned out to be 21 according to a report from the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK), the daily reported in its main article yesterday. In line with the ATK report, O.S. may receive a longer sentence because he is considered to be an adult, not a minor. O.S’s lawyer says there is document proving that O.S. has just completed his secondary school education.
