Baykal is the most successful main opposition leader ever seen in the history of the Turkish Republic.
Mr. Baykal has opted to pursue a political line based on saying “no” to everything. It suffices for him to say “no” to every proposal from the government. For instance, yesterday, CHP parliamentary group deputy chairman Hakkı Süha Okay gave a conditional yes to the government’s proposal on a bill concerning the “stone-throwing children.” He referred to the United Nations, and so on, as he did this. However, the bill that allows the imprisoning of stone-throwing children for 7-19 years had been drafted by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party).
