Auto sector increases production by 89 pct in first two months

11 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The Turkish automotive industry enjoyed recovery during the first two months of the year, with production climbing 89 percent and exports rising 75 percent over the same period of last year.

According to data released by the Automotive Industry Association (OSD), 162,823 vehicles were produced in Turkey in January and February, an increase of 89 percent over the same two months in 2009. The data show that 93,175 passenger vehicles and 61,887 pickups were produced in this period. Production in February was a staggering 83 percent higher than the same month in 2009, indicating that the automotive sector has been revitalized after a slump in global demand.

Exports also saw a great boost, increasing by 75 percent from 73,305 vehicles leaving the country in January and February 2009 to 128,212 this year, or more than 78 percent of total production. Capacity utilization, however, remains low in the automotive sector, with a figure of 65 percent in February.
