Korean teenager Noh Seung-yul shot a six-under-par 66 on Wednesday to share the opening round lead with Danny Chia of Malaysia at British Open qualifying for Asia.
Noh shot an eagle and seven birdies against a bogey and a double bogey at Malaysia’s Saujana Golf and Country Club to boost his chances of claiming one of four berths available to the British Open in July. Noh had earlier won the Malaysian Open on Sunday. Chia carded a flawless round highlighted by six birdies in his bid for a third appearance in the world’s oldest major. Hiroyuki Fujita of Japan and Korean amateur Eric Chun shot matching 67s for tied third position in the 36-hole qualifier. Further behind were China’s Wu Ashun and Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, who both shot 69. The 18-year-old Noh, who started from the 10th tee, bounced back superbly from a double bogey on the 12th hole when he sank a 15-foot eagle on the 13th. “It was a mixed round for me, but overall I’m glad to shoot what I did on this tough course,” Noh said.
