Turkey, drug makers in talks over unused swine flu vaccines

Turkey is in talks with pharmaceutical companies to give unused swine flu vaccines back, following reports that the pandemic is petering out in the country, Health Minister Recep Akdağ said on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters in Ankara, Akdağ said Turkey had ordered 43 million doses of swine flu vaccine last year but received only 17 million. “We have had talks with manufacturers to give a significant part of the vaccines back,” Akdağ said. “However, we will keep 2-3 million doses in reserve for emergencies.” In January Akdağ had said the pandemic H1N1 infection killed over 600 people in Turkey this winter, adding, “The swine flu pandemic has almost disappeared in Turkey.”
Akdağ reiterated that the pandemic was almost over, adding that a second pandemic wave could be expected in the autumn of this year but that it would not be as widespread. “We are about to finalize deals [with manufacturers] to return unused vaccines,” Akdağ said.
