Positive discrimination for women

10 March 2010 / HASAN CELAL GÜZEL RADİKAL,
As constitutional amendments are being prepared and are about to be submitted to Parliament, it would be proper to introduce several positive discrimination provisions into the package that will be referred to referendum.
The following provisions can be enacted in connection with positive discrimination: (1) Based on the principle of equality before laws enshrined in Article 10 of the Constitution, legislation that would introduce equal rights to women can be inserted into the second paragraph of the same article. (2) An article concerning the rights of women may be inserted after Article 17 in the chapter on Rights and Duties of Individuals of the Constitution. (3) An article concerning the protection of women may be inserted as the first article of the chapter on Social and Economic Rights and Duties of the Constitution. (4) The lifting of the infamous headscarf ban on university campuses may be included in the referendum package. I would like to celebrate International Women’s Day for all women.
