Dolls made by Ayşe Durak, a woman from Bursa’s Sorgun village, have taken on a life of their own. Their fame will carry them beyond Turkey’s borders, but only after a patent is issued. Durak said she made the first of these dolls, clothed in traditional outfits, 17 years ago for her son.
Star: Former owner of the Sabah newspaper and ATV Dinç Bilgin said the military decided on the major story of his newspaper during the Feb. 28, 1997 postmodern coup, which resulted in the removal of a coalition led by the Islamic Welfare Party (RP), the daily stated in a front-page story yesterday. Bilgin said: “At that time, we were fighting with the politicians but were unable to criticize members of the military. Even as a boss, I was unable to decide on the editorial policy of my newspaper. Another power influenced my newspaper. There was a three-legged balance including the military, the judiciary and the media back then. These were the real powers in the country.”

Sabah: A front-page story in the daily reported on the results of a survey carried out by the Reuters news agency which revealed that 52 percent of Turks were of the opinion that a woman’s place is in the home. The survey of over 24,000 adults in 23 countries conducted by Reuters/Ipsos and released on the eve of International Women’s Day showed that people from India (54 percent), Turkey (52 percent), Japan (48 percent), China, Russia, Hungary (34 percent each) and South Korea (33 percent) were most likely to agree that women should not work.

Radikal: “Not an earthquake but a mud-brick disaster,” was the headline of the daily’s main story yesterday, which held mud-brick houses responsible for the loss of 51 lives in an earthquake that hit the eastern province of Elazığ on Monday. The magnitude of the earthquake was just 6, but it claimed many lives, said the daily. The reason for the earthquake, which should not actually have led to any damage, is the mud-brick houses that were more poorly built than those constructed by the Hittites, said the daily.
