And Eskişehirspor, popularly known as EsEs, kept the tradition alive as it humiliated the “mighty” Lions again, winning 2-1 in their Turkcell Super League week 24 match at the Eskişehir Stadium on Monday night.
Goals by Koray Arslan in the 43rd and 46th minutes were more than enough to bring the Lions down to earth with a stinging bump. Galatasaray’s consolation goal came from a penalty converted by Brazil playmaker Elano Blumer in the 72nd but it was too little, too late to do any good. And so the Lions, natural predators, became the prey and were hunted down.
“This match marked the turning point of our fortunes,” Eskişehirspor coach Rıza Çalımbay said. “We are going take all our remaining matches equally seriously and guard against complacency,” he further said
Last season Eskişehirspor, known as EsEs, won at home and away against the Lions and the encounter between the two teams in the season’s first half ended in a 1-1 draw. Monday’s result therefore means EsEs has won three and drawn one in its last four league meetings with the Galatasaray Lions.
One man’s loss is another man’s gain, so Galatasaray’s defeat is a blessing to the other Turkcell Super League championship contenders. In other words, the league title race has been thrown wide open again following the Lions’ loss. “Eskişehirspor deserved victory,” Galatasaray’s Dutch coach Frank Rijkaard said after the match.
“We played badly and lost; Eskişehirspor was the better side and therefore won. We sent several of our players on national assignments, and they returned to the squad tired, so signs of match-weariness were clearly visible in the team,” the Dutchman further noted. The Fenerbahçe Yellow Canaries beat Antalyaspor 1-0 at home on Sunday night, taking the maximum points. The Beşiktaş Black Eagles earned three points without kicking a ball as they awarded a 3-0 victory in their match against relegated Ankaraspor, as is the case with any team that is pitted against the doomed Ankara side.
The Diyarbakırspor-Bursaspor match on Saturday was called off because of the misbehavior of the Diyarbakırspor fans, meaning Bursaspor sooner rather than later will be declared a 3-0 winner by default and awarded the maximum points.
These three teams -- Bursaspor, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş --- are all battling for the Turkcell Super League lead. And this means Galatasaray’s sojourn on the league summit may soon become a thing of the past.
