March 8 Women’s Day: fun and entertainment

9 March 2010 / FATMA BARBAROSOĞLU YENI ŞAFAK,
The topic I have been mulling over for several days in relation to debates on censorship is whether television impacts people or people impact television.
Images of women dancing early in the morning on daytime television programs apparently were even included in programs organized by municipalities for women on March 8. It’s almost as if there is a desire to make everyone say, “Wow, we had so much fun” as often as possible.

Friends, at least let us not have fun on March 8. Let March 8 be a day to remember working women struggling to stay alive in the midst of poverty. Let it be a day for young women who can’t take advantage of their right to education, poor mothers who can’t offer a bright future to their children, old women who can’t find a place to go, desperate female scientists who can’t find funding for their projects and potential female authors whose books are rejected even before they are read.
