How to detect autism early on

7 March 2010 / SUNDAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Professor Efser Kerimoğlu, the president of the Center for Diagnosis, Care and Research of Autistic Children, which is affiliated with Ankara University and provides educational services for autistic children in Turkey, said detecting the early signs of autism was of paramount importance but added that a definitive diagnosis should not be made until a child reaches the age of 3.

Noting that autism is a disorder that affects people from birth or the early months of life and leads to problems in social interaction and communication, Kerimoğlu said while symptoms can be detected in babies less than 1 year old, most of the babies admitted to the center are between a one-and-a-half and 2 years old. Professor Runa İdil Uslu, the president of the center's 0-3 Years Old Infant Mental Health Unit, warns parents and guardians that it is very important to monitor a baby's interaction and communication with his surroundings from their earliest months of life. Emphasizing that pediatric and family physicians have an important role to play in early detection, Uslu said interactive therapy is necessary to build the relationship between an autistic child and the child's mother and to improve the success of the treatment. She noted that there is no drug therapy for autism but that some medication can be used to treat some symptoms.
