Gen. Berk's coup meeting in Erzİncan attended by 16 commanders

A meeting held last year in the eastern province of Erzincan under the leadership of 3rd Army Commander Gen. Saldıray Berk, who is a prime suspect in a terrorism case, was attended by the military commanders of 16 Turkish cities.

The meeting, held ahead of last year's March 29 municipal elections, was called a “seminar" and was reportedly an occasion during which participants discussed a coup d'état against the government. The meeting's participants included two chief public prosecutors and several commanders from the General Staff Mobilization Department, according to the indictment against Erzincan Chief Public Prosecutor İlhan Cihaner and Gen. Berk.

Cihaner was arrested last month on charges of membership in a terrorist organization and the falsification of documents.

Participants in the meeting also discussed a local plot in Erzincan to create an atmosphere that would increase tension in the region. The plot was planned to be put into operation if the AK Party government maintained its power after the 2011 parliamentary elections.

According to the plot, members of the ruling party would be linked to certain religious communities and illegal organizations, which would lead to detailed investigations into them. The scope of the investigations would be expanded to the whole country. Unidentified operatives would plant weapons at the addresses of followers of religious communities. The weapons would be discovered during the course of the investigations, and as a result, those communities would be presented to the public as “terrorist organizations.” Police raids on these addresses would result in the arrests of hundreds of the communities’ followers.

Participants in the meeting later met for dinner at an Erzincan café and discussed a plan to foment tension between the Sunni and Alevi residents of the city, the indictment stated.

The indictment also features the testimony of a secret witness code-named Efe. According to the witness, the “seminars” during which participants plotted a military takeover of the government were also attended by Col. Dursun Çiçek, whose signature appears on a separate plot titled the Action Plan to Fight Reactionaryism.

The plan suggests that the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) systematically plotted to damage the image of the AK Party and the Gülen movement in the eyes of the public.
