Ankara minibus drivers block road to protest fare decrease

6 March 2010 / EBUBEKİR ATMACA , ANKARA
A group of Ankara dolmuş and minibus drivers yesterday closed one of the busiest roads of the city to protest an administrative court ruling decreasing fares to prices last seen six years ago.
The drivers convened in front of the Supreme Court of Appeals while a number of them closed Kızılay Boulevard to traffic with their dolmuşes. A spokesperson read a press statement on behalf of the group.

The drivers said the fare decrease put them in a difficult position and that they could not work with those fares, adding that no dolmuşes or buses will work starting on Monday.

During the protest, quarrels occurred between the drivers and Ankara residents, who said the decrease was the right decision.

The Consumer Rights Association (THD) had filed suit with Ankara’s 9th Administrative Court asking for a repeal of the fee increase for Ankara public transportation, and the court ruled to roll back prices to 2003 levels. Starting this Monday, full price bus tickets will be Kr 90, and student tickets will be Kr 60, while short distance dolmuş fares will be Kr 90 and long distance fares TL 1.
