Vice Principal Ekrem Şavran (33) shot pre-school teacher Derya Çakır (25), after which he stabbed her and slit her throat. The incident was reportedly not heard by others in the school since they were carrying out an earthquake drill.Çakır died despite doctors’ efforts to resuscitate her. Her body was then sent to the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) for autopsy.
Şavran was taken to the police station to testify following a health check. Şavran and Çakır are said to have dated for a while, but Çakır left him and started to see someone else, which enraged Şavran. The detained suspect reportedly said in his testimony, “I fell in love for the first time, got jealous and killed her.”
Çakır’s parents learned about the incident after being summoned to the police station. Her mother was hospitalized upon finding out about the murder.
The students’ parents came to the school to pick their children up, while others were taken home by school officials. A parent of one of Çakır’s students said: “My daughter saw the incident and told me: ‘One of the teachers hit Teacher Derya, and tomato paste came out of her throat.’ My daughter has been crying ever since.” İstanbul Provincial Education Director Muammer Yıldız said an investigation has been opened into the incident.
