6 March 2010 / EMRE AKÖZ SABAH,
You know the story. A group of female Republican People’s Party (CHP) supporters tore black chadors into pieces on Wednesday.
The most levelheaded statement about the incident came from CHP group deputy chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Underlining that the demonstration was disturbing, he said: “The incident is a provocation against the CHP. Those who do this are giving grist to the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) mill.” This is a sensible approach given that only a fanatic who has become obsessed with secularism can make the chador a problem in this day and age. There are many women who wear the headscarf today, but those who wear the black chador are quite limited, only about 1 percent. Women wear different kinds of headscarves, but demand for the chador is very low.
