Talat and Christofias discuss economy at 69th meeting

5 March 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias met for the 69th time yesterday at the residence of Taye-Brook Zerihoun, the UN secretary-general’s special representative to Cyprus, to discuss the economy within the scope of reunification negotiations, started in September 2008.

During the daylong meeting to discuss the economy, the two leaders were also expected to make an overall assessment of the peace talks. The UN secretary-general’s special advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, also attended the meeting. Special representatives of the two leaders, Özdil Nami and Yorgos Yakovu, met to discuss the economy on Wednesday with the aim of preparing for yesterday’s meeting.

The leaders will meet on March 16 and 30 and then will suspend talks for almost a month due to the presidential elections in the KKTC on April 18. Talat will be running against the incumbent prime minister, Derviş Eroğlu, who is known to be a hard-liner in negotiations despite his repeated assurances that he will continue talks with Greek Cyprus.
