A new era of respecting nature in fashion

5 March 2010 / REYHAN YAZICI , İSTANBUL
In February and early March, we have trouble keeping up with news coming from the fashion world.
On the one hand, we are keeping an eye on discounts, and on the other, the season’s popular new designs start making an appearance in store windows. With all the promotions, fashion shows and fashion weeks in which creations for next year are introduced, February was over before we knew it.

This week, I would like to write about the fabrics, colors and details that we will see in the spring-summer collections. There are 10 main colors that will dominate the 2010 summer collection, which can be divided into four main themes. In addition to white, which will be everywhere we look, we will also come across wines, turquoises, vibrant yellow tones (green-based ones especially will be very common), matte oranges, light purple and lilac colors, natural greens, light blues and classic reds. In addition to these colors, we will see light grays, beiges and neon colors in some collections.

Romantic wave: This group, which features a fusion of pinks, beiges, whites and light purples, makes references to ancient times. Feminine romantic cuts are common styles. They include silk and satin fabrics that provide the perfect flow for daily outfits. Drapes, pleats, textured lines, wrinkled effects, puffy fabrics, knits, macramés, matted looks, buttons, natural materials and synthetic materials have been put together in various designs.

Colorfulness: When the weather gets warm, we all tend to want to dress colorfully. Inspired by Latin America, designers used a lot of carnival colors this season. We will see handmade knits, colorful flowers, stripes, checks, animal prints, plants and many other patterns. Some fashion designers recommend combining outfits that have different patterns. I don’t know how it’s going to turn out, but they seem determined to have men don colorful floral shirts.

Minimalism: You will find straight cuts and silhouettes enriched with plain and smooth fabrics, which Stella McCartney has used in her collection as well. Outfits include architectural lines. It looks like a modern touch has been added to the 1960s. Sleeveless jackets and top-stitching in contrasting threads are some of the main highlights in this group.

Layered outfits: In this category, it looks like everything is worn on top of each other. It includes a mixed style of checks, torn looks, baggy designs, soft fabric, both narrow and wide-leg pants and redefined old outfits. Collections in this group will in a way bear the effects of the economic crisis.

These groups are developed according to different tastes and preferences and appeal to various lifestyles. It is for this reason that people end up following fashion even if they don’t want to.
