Design store waiting for young talent
Üstündağ explained the three main missions of the store. The first is to turn the spotlight back on Turkish artists. In this respect, the store sells products featuring the works of leading artists such as Eyüboğlu, Dino, Tan Oral and Aliye Berger. There is a leather collection as well as silk scarves, silk pillows and porcelain items.
Since Dino had a very passionate but difficult life, struggling with various health problems, the colors of passion and adversity, red and black, were assigned as the colors of one collection. A ring designed for this collection was created using the traditional tile-making technique. Eyüboğlu’s colorful life is reflected in green, sand brown and icy-colored products. Oral’s playful cats have been represented in black and white.
The İKSV store’s other mission is to bring Turkish designers together. The store features items from designers such as Ela Cindoruk, Oya Akman, Erdem Akan and Devran Mursaloğlu as well as items from young and emerging talent. Oya Erol’s plates feature Hellenistic characters and modern icons. “İstanbul Dresses” came about as a collaborative project by a photographer and an advertiser who placed photographs of İstanbul on contemporary items. Hande Bilten’s rings, Deniz Toraman’s porcelain İstanbul seagulls and Mursaloğlu’s paper-made furniture are among the items on sale at the store.
Some designs and artwork from different parts of the world are on sale for the first time in Turkey at the İKSV store. This is actually the store’s third mission. You can find a wide range of original items from paper-made decorative items and watches featuring artistic designs to bookmarks and cardholders in this section.
Colorful crystal vases which look like Ottoman and Roman quilted turbans are also on display. Every quilted turban-shaped vase in the Glass Workshop weighs around seven kilograms. They were handmade from blocks of crystal. In the İstanbul section, there are original works of art by Devrim Erbil and Ara Güler. Hacı Bekir’s Turkish coffee and traditional Turkish delight made with mastic gum are offered in artistic black and turquoise-colored boxes.
The Barbarlar Group, which consists of 17 Turkish designers who only come together for exhibitions, put together a collection named “İstanbul Irony” at the request of the İKSV. Unique items such as a necklace with gemstones on the outside and gold on the inside and a paperweight in the shape of a sigara böreği, a popular Turkish cigar-shaped pastry made with feta cheese and phyllo dough, were created. Üstündağ said they have plans to open up a second store. A Web site to purchase their products online will be ready in the near future.

Vases, ashtrays, decorative bowls, coasters, key chains, notebooks, cups, candle holders, pens, pillows, necklaces, bags, cardholders, bookmarks, rings, watches, umbrellas, pencils, T-shirts, mugs, plates and decorative paper products.
