Report: Gen. Eruygur attended Cage meeting despite ‘amnesia’

Şener Eruygur
26 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Şener Eruygur, a retired general who is a prime suspect in the trial of Ergenekon, a shadowy criminal network that has alleged links within the state and is suspected of plotting to topple the government, attended a meeting in 2009 during which attendees -- all members of the military -- discussed the details of the subversive Cage plan, the Yeni Şafak daily reported on Thursday.

The plan, allegedly drafted by active duty officers at the Naval Forces Command, outlined the assassination of prominent Turkish non-Muslim figures. The blame for the killings would have been placed on the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), which, according to the plan, would have eventually led to a military takeover.

The daily reported that police discovered documents at the houses of three lieutenants as part of the Ergenekon probe last year. One of the documents bore the notice: “Orders related to our headquarters from the meeting with Eruygur Pasha.” The document was prepared in May 2009, eight months after Eruygur was released from prison due to health problems.

Eruygur is facing charges of being a senior leader of Ergenekon, a group suspected of being responsible for various subversive acts that have taken place throughout Turkey. The prosecution is demanding three consecutive life sentences for Eruygur. Earlier this month, he refused to testify as part of an investigation into the financial resources of Ergenekon on the grounds that he is suffering from amnesia.

Documents seized at the houses of lieutenants Burak Düzalan, Alperen Erdoğan and Yakut Ersoy were recently sent to the İstanbul 12th High Criminal Court for examination.

Yeni Şafak claimed that the meeting Eruygur attended was convened to figure out how to keep those arrested thus far as part of the Ergenekon probe out of prison. The meeting was also attended by admirals Kadir Sağdıç and Mehmet Fatih Ilgar and five other senior military members. The admirals testified earlier this week to civilian prosecutors in western İzmir on their suspected links to the Cage plan.

The Cage plan also outlined an act of terror against students visiting the Rahmi M. Koç Museum. According to the plan, several blocks of TNT and other explosives placed at the bottom of a submarine exhibited at the museum were to be detonated while a large group of students was visiting the museum. Thirty-eight suspects have been interrogated as part of the Cage plan thus far. Seven have been arrested and put behind bars.
