23 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
İstanbul topped Turkey’s cities in foreign trade again last year, with export and import levels of $55.6 billion and $78.6 billion, respectively, accounting for 54.4 percent of the country’s total exports and 55.8 percent of total imports.

According to data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), 11 provinces -- İstanbul, Bursa, İzmir, Ankara, Kocaeli, Gaziantep, Sakarya, Denizli, Hatay, Adana and Kayseri -- have exports and imports totaling more than $1 billion. These cities also account for 88.2 percent of the country’s overall exports and 94.4 percent of overall imports. Bursa and İzmir were the cities registering the highest export figures after İstanbul. Bursa sold $9.06 billion in goods overseas, while İzmir posted $6.12 billion in exports. In imports, Ankara came in second on the list after İstanbul by registering imports of $16.49 billion, while Kocaeli was third with $14.35 billion worth of goods purchased.

With an export level of $19,000, Tunceli was the province with the least exports in 2009. Tunceli was also the only city that had no imports.
