Koray Öztürkler, vice general manager of corporate communications and relations for Turkcell, speaking at the 4th Telecommunication Summit in Sakarya on Sunday, said 2.5 million of the current 5 million 3G subscribers are actively using 3G services. Other customers of the company want to subscribe to 3G, too, Öztürkler said, but cannot due to the incompatibility of their phones. The number of wideband mobile Internet subscribers of the leading telecommunications company also has also risen by 300,000 in the past six months, he stated.
Recalling that the 3G system in Turkey began on July 30, 2009, Öztürkler stated that data traffic in their network has risen by a factor of five thus far. “Seventy percent of the company’s total data traffic is in 3G networks, even though 2G is still in use.”
Turkcell’s share of the mobile Internet market is currently 65 percent, he said. Making this system widely used all around the country is a main goal of the company, Öztürkler said, adding that most video calls were made in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır’s Sur district.
