Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Çakmakçı of Ferroli, a space heating company based in İstanbul, pointed out that buildings would be graded based on their energy efficiency in accordance with the BEP regulation, which went into effect in December. These energy efficiency grades, much like those seen on appliances, would lead to changes in the market price of housing that more accurately reflect how energy efficient the building is, he said.
“These ratings will change the rental and selling prices of housing,” Çakmakçı stated, adding that all buildings would be required to have an energy efficiency grade by 2017. He called, however, on the government to help with the changeover. “There are currently no support programs from the government to aid in this transition. … The government isn’t saying anything about providing incentives or support to insulate buildings, to replace light bulbs or to transform the space heating systems in buildings. This energy efficiency grading system will be incredibly important. People will have to invest in energy efficient solutions to keep the value of their property up.”
The much-debated regulation brought in many requirements to maximize energy efficiency in buildings. It will require all buildings to be inspected and graded based on various energy saving indicators including space heating solutions, insulation and materials used in building construction.
