Raise your baby with organic food

22 February 2010 / SELASE KOÇ , İSTANBUL
The first two years have special importance for the growth and development of infants.
Their physical and mental development is considerably faster at this time when compared to other periods of their lives. In their first year, infants gain up to three times their weight at birth and they grow 50 percent taller. Healthy and balanced nutrition during this rapid development phase protects them against future cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, immune system diseases and, most importantly, from malignant diseases caused by the accumulation of chemicals. The most beneficial food during the first six months is unquestionably breast milk.

Foods with additives have negative effects on infant development

After the sixth month, infant nutrition is enriched with the addition of fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, yoghurt and so on in conjunction with breast milk. Today, supplying the world’s ever-increasing population with sufficient food has become a serious problem. Thus, food has started to be produced using less healthy fertilization systems and with additives and we now eat all sorts of fruits and vegetables every season. The additives and hormones used in these foodstuffs tend to accumulated in body as a result of extended use and may cause medical problems. If the body is unable to expel them, they accumulate and may create serious medical problems for an infant who is expected to live for 70 years on average. Non-organic foods should be washed and rinsed thoroughly and their exterior should be removed. Avoid fruits and vegetables which are not in season.

Select organic food for healthy development of children

Although the prevalence of non-organic agriculture has skyrocketed, some companies have started to sell organic fruits and vegetables as an alternative. Organic foods are grown under natural conditions and do not contain elements harmful to human health such as chemicals or hormones. They are not packaged in synthetic materials.

Since the consumption of organic food is currently limited, it is more expensive than non-organic food. But if the consumption of organic food increases, this will in turn lead to an increase in the production of organic food, followed by a decrease in its price. If we aim to use as much organic food as possible during the early years of our children’s lives it will help them lead long and healthy lives.
