Trial of suspects in factory blast begins

20 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The trial of eight suspects who are believed to be responsible for an explosion at a factory building in İstanbul in 2008 that caused multiple casualties started on Thursday.
On Jan. 31, 2008 an explosion in the industrial Davutpaşa district in İstanbul killed 20 people and injured at least 110 after it brought down several floors of the multi-storey structure. The blast, triggered by an explosion in the factory’s unlicensed fireworks production area, caused part of the five-storey building to collapse and started a fire on the top level. The businesses in the building included textile producers in addition to the fireworks manufacturer.

The trial of six public officials and two building owners began on Thursday at the Bakırköy 6th Criminal Court. Feruz Kutsal, Şevket Yıldırım, Servet Kırna, Hatice Küçükakyüz, Hasan Altay and Rüstem Tekin from the Zeytinburnu Municipality attended the hearing, but building co-owners Resul Koçyiğit and Remzi Koçyiğit did not. Families of the victims and attorneys representing the plaintiffs were also present during the first hearing of the trial.

The suspects are charged with misconduct and causing the death of more than one person and face between three and 18 years in prison, the indictment said.
