İstanbul, a city with an ancient past dating back over 8,500 years, became the sixth city in the world to which the Swatch Group gave a place in its collection. The group previously designed special watches for London, New York, Zurich, Tokyo and Madrid. The İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency believes the watch, named “İstanbul34,” is expected to be among the best projects to have the city recognized throughout the world as it includes a silhouette of major İstanbul landmarks.
İstanbul was officially introduced as a 2010 European Capital of Culture in Brussels, the capital of the European Union, in February 2010. The agency completed many projects in the run-up to 2010 to prepare the city to hold the title. However, it attached much importance to the watch because the Swatch brand is known worldwide.
The watch includes a skyline featuring well-known İstanbul sites such as the Bosporus, the Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi), the Hagia Sofia Museum and the Blue Mosque. İstanbul34 will hit store shelves in March and be priced at TL 99.
