3-D tour of İstanbul districts available in homes everywhere

After a foray into presenting 3-D stadiums to Internet surfers, the 3dlocationearth Web site now offers glimpses and tours of İstanbul’s most popular tourist sites to Internet users everywhere.
Computer software that works with Google Earth using satellite images, the three-dimensional Turkish tour guide site www.3dlocationearth.com gives Web users an opportunity they never had before: to tour parts of İstanbul from the comfort of their own homes.

This service, which first offered views of Turkey’s airports and stadiums, now presents parts of İstanbul such as Sirkeci, Taksim, Bakırköy, Bağdat Caddesi and Kadıköy to curious armchair tourists.

Speaking about the new venture, 3dlocationearth.com General Manager Aybars Görpe says: “There is no longer even a need to leave your home if you want to take a tour of the thousands of years of history contained in İstanbul and some of its historic sections, such as Sirkeci and the streets of Beyoğlu. After all, you can now take a stroll through these places right on your computer!”

Noting that all you need is a computer with Internet access, Görpe adds, “You can go from shop to shop while sitting in front of your computer. You can see hotels, visit historic sites, check restaurants, markets, learn locations and just stroll comfortably around the streets.”

Avoid chaos in İstanbul

Görpe also notes that one of the best aspects of going on a 3-D tour of İstanbul over the Internet is that people can enjoy the city and all its sights without having to deal with the crowds, the chaos and the traffic. He said many details of the Sirkeci and Taksim neighborhoods can be enjoyed by Internet users who visit the www.3dlocationearth.com Web site and click on the “caddeler” tab.

“We took step-by-step photographs of these districts to create 3-D images. We also created models of each and every building. This took around three months for us. We thus created an opportunity for many hotels and companies to present themselves. Every day, more and more Turkish companies that want to have connections abroad contact us. That being the case, this sort of Internet capability and presence are requirements for our success.”

‘Increased marketing strength’

Görpe also mentioned the extraordinary influence wielded by Google Earth, one of the world’s most widely used map programs, saying that it has raised the marketing strength of not only cities, but many companies.

“The world is already using all of this. Our nation has not taken advantage of the huge marketing tool that is this, and it’s possible that we have been missing out on some very great global marketing opportunities,” Görpe says, adding that people have become so accustomed to Google Earth that they often take a look at the places they are traveling to using this program before actually setting out on their journeys.

“One of our nation’s most important sources of revenue is tourism. And tourism can really benefit from this 3-D offering. We are looking to attract not only foreign tourists, but domestic tourism as well. We are both promoting our country and getting lots of pleasure from this work. Not only this, but İstanbul is a 2010 European Capital of Culture and one of the world’s five largest cities. Its star shines more and more every day. This whole 3-D system is going to be talked about more and more in 2010, making it even more necessary for us to be successful in promoting this city,” he says.
