Sarıgül vows to fight coefficient decision

18 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey Movement for Change (TDH) head Mustafa Sarıgül, who is also the mayor of İstanbul’s Şişli district, has criticized the ongoing unjust application of coefficients on the university entrance exam and expressed support for its main victims, the graduates of imam-hatip high schools.

Sarıgül paid a visit to ÖNDER, a civil society organization bringing together the students and graduates of imam-hatip high schools, on Wednesday and stated that thousands of youngsters are being deprived of their right to education because of the Council of State’s recent ruling, which abolished a Higher Education Board (YÖK) decision on university entrance exam coefficients aimed at forging a fairer set of rules for all students.

YÖK’s decision had excited thousands of students and graduates of not only imam-hatip high schools but also other vocational high schools preparing for the exam since their scores would be calculated with nearly the same coefficient as graduates of other schools. With that decision overruled, many politicians, businessmen and civil society organizations are currently crying out against the interference of the Council of State.
