A group of Socialist Democracy Party (SDP) members occupied the Cervantes Institute, a Spanish cultural center located in İstanbul’s Tarlabaşı district, yesterday to support workers dismissed from Tekel factories after the privatization of the state-owned alcohol and tobacco monopoly.
The group reportedly vandalized the building’s elevators and then obstructed the stairways. They unfurled banners from the building’s windows with slogans, “We win if Tekel wins” and “A united fist against capital holders.” Riot police were deployed to the area and broke up the demonstration, detaining protesters. The government’s privatization of several of the monopoly’s factories left nearly 10,000 workers without jobs, leading to a protest against the government by Tekel workers from throughout the country. The government has offered the workers employment elsewhere but only on 11-month renewable contracts.
The workers were fired when Tekel was sold to British American Tobacco Investments Ltd. Their protest turned into a hunger strike last month.
