Turkey, Iraq kick off train service

17 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A passenger train service in the works since October between the southeastern Turkish province of Gaziantep and the Iraqi province of Mosul saw its maiden run on Tuesday.

In a written press release issued yesterday, the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) noted that Turkey and Iraq made the decision to establish a passenger train service in accordance with an agreement signed at the Turkish-Iraqi High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council on Oct. 15, 2009. The first train is expected to arrive in Gaziantep from Mosul today.

The Gaziantep-Mosul trip will take approximately 18 hours, including customs and passport control stops. Passengers will be able to travel for between 25 and 35 euros. The Gaziantep-Mosul service will run weekly. The passenger train will depart from Mosul on Tuesdays and from Gaziantep on Thursdays.
