Isparta’s roses to adorn gardens of Topkapı Palace

16 February 2010 / MESUT MERCAN , ISPARTA
Isparta in southwestern Turkey is particularly famous for its roses, and their splendor will soon grace the gardens of Topkapı Palace in İstanbul.
Ayten Altıntaş, a professor at İstanbul University’s Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, has done research on Isparta’s roses to see whether they are beneficial to human health.

Altıntaş said that rose water and rose oil were among the most valued gifts given to Ottoman sultans as they were believed to help battle wrinkles. “There were plots containing rose bushes in the garden of Topkapı Palace as well as a lot of stills which made it easy to extract rose water in the early days at the palace. If we look at the Islamic world, we can easily see that rose water plays an important role.”

“Rose water that was placed inside jewelry boxes adorned with precious jewels, as well as special bottles that were decorated with gold, silver and diamonds were given to the sultans as gifts,” Altıntaş explained.

Altıntaş believes that planting roses from Isparta in the gardens of Topkapı Palace will be a reminder of the ancient soul of the palace and will attract many tourists. The roses will be planted in a 50-meter area of the garden.

Mentioning the function of roses in the field of medicine, Altıntaş said: “The rose has been used in medicine as a remedy because of its health benefits. When used as a paste or consumed as a nectar, it’s effective in healing illnesses dealing with the stomach, liver and skin. It is also known that the scent of roses is good for the memory.” Altıntaş added that Turkey sees its rose sector as important because there are many commercial rose growers in Turkey.

Rose product exports

Rose products, including rose water and rose oil, are seen as an important element in the cosmetics sector. Gülbirlik, a partnership of 3,000 growers which has two rose oil factories and two rose syrup facilities, has been exporting rose products to foreign countries and meeting nearly 40 percent of the need for rose products.

Gülbirlik General Manager Bolat Tamer said they entered the sector approximately five years ago and now export rose products to Germany, Holland, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Austria, Albania, Taiwan and Japan. Tamer underlined that they produce rose products for the cosmetics sector in accordance with world standards.
