Suspicious package found at US Consulate General

13 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
A suspicious package was found yesterday morning outside the US Consulate General in İstanbul.
The US Embassy in Ankara issued a press release yesterday to inform the public about a suspicious package found outside the US Consulate General in İstanbul shortly after 11 a.m. Stating that security officials at the consulate immediately notified the Turkish police, the embassy said police quickly arrived to inspect the package. “The Turkish National Police conducted a controlled destruction of the package.  No hazardous or explosive materials were found inside the package and the Consulate General has resumed normal operations,” read the statement. The statement also thanked the Turkish National Police, once again, for their rapid and professional response to this situation. Some news reports said the package, which was detonated by bomb experts, contained a watch and a book.
