Türk Telekom shows growth in 2009 amid economic crisis

13 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s telecommunication giant Türk Telekom saw a 5 percent increase in profits in 2009, despite the difficult economic year and fierce competition in the sector among mobile operators.
In a press release on its 2009 fourth quarter results, Türk Telekom noted that the group increased its revenues by 4 percent over 2008 to exceed TL 10.5 billion. The group’s net income, or profits, reached TL 1.8 billion, growing by 5 percent compared to last year. The recently privatized landline operator also saw a more than 40 percent increase in capital expenditures, or consolidated investments, in 2009, nearly TL 2.5 billion. Its income from ADSL subscribers, provided by its subsidiary TTNET, increased by 29 percent in 2009 over 2008, and revenues from its cellular service, provided by its subsidiary Avea, grew by 19 percent to reach TL 2.5 billion.

CEO Paul Doany, speaking about the results and the social responsibility projects undertaken by the company, stated that it had financed the construction of 48 new schools for the Ministry of Education and had achieved its target of saving 100,000 trees under a paperless billing project.
