LONDON -- Turkey needs to have an internal debate on whether its eventual entry to the bloc will be to Turkey’s benefit, Suat Kınıklıoğlu, the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) deputy chairman for external affairs, said on Wednesday, warning that Turkey has no “geopolitical patience” to wait for another 10-15 years to become a member.
“Turkey may not want to join the EU which, particularly nowadays, shows symptoms of a very narrow and self-isolated vision. The 27 countries are having great difficulty making decisions; I don’t believe that Turkey would like to enter an Islamophobic union which is self-isolated and lacking of self-confidence,” Kınıklıoğlu told the Anatolia news agency during a visit to London.
