4,300 die, 200,000 injured in 2009 traffic accidents, data show

Recently released police data including traffic accident statistics for 2009 paint a grim picture of the state of the roads in Turkey.
Last year, 4,300 people were killed and 200,000 injured in a total 299,569 traffic accidents in Turkey. Of these accidents, 264,163 took place in areas of police jurisdiction, while 35,406 took place in gendarmerie regions. Out of the accidents, 3,393 were recorded as resulting in at least one fatality, 17,513 with at least one injury and 188,663 as resulting in property damage. The accidents caused an estimated TL 980,209,298 in property damage alone.

As for the causes of the accidents: 138,942 accidents were the result of driver error, 12,890 were the fault of pedestrians, 628 were the fault of passengers, 405 were from vehicle problems and 500 were from road problems. Additional data revealed that a total of 125,000 driver’s licenses were suspended last year and that 722,000 vehicles were banned from the roads.
