İstanbul authorities lower Metrobus fares

The Metrobus mass transit system in İstanbul carries an estimated 700,000 people each day.
10 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME) decided on Monday to lower Metrobus fares from TL 2 to TL 1.50 in line with a ruling by an administrative court in İstanbul last month suspending last November’s fare hike.
UKOME raised the prices of Metrobus tickets by 33 percent in November, with full fare Metrobus tickets costing TL 2 instead of TL 1.50 while discounted fares rose from TL 0.85 to TL 1. However, with the decision made by the İstanbul 10th Administrative Court on Monday, prices returned to their previous levels yesterday.

A meeting was held at the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) building in İstanbul’s Saraçhane district on Monday. UKOME’s officials reported that İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş would sign off on the center’s decision. The Metrobus mass transit system, which carries an estimated 700,000 people each day, has become a favorite form of transport for many İstanbulites as its buses take less time and depart more frequently than regular city buses. Therefore, many people reacted strongly to the increase in Metrobus fares, and some switched to cheaper forms of transit. These riders are expected to take the Metrobus once again with the return to the lower fare.

İstanbulites have expressed satisfaction with the abolishment of the increase in Metrobus fares, adding that this will provide some relief to their budgets. Noting that the Metrobus line is a useful form of transportation, many described the TL 2 fare as excessive.
