A meeting of the Bandırma Sanitation Board led by District Mayor Ali Mantı decided that in the face of water supply and delivery problems that have been continuing intermittently since Jan. 25, elementary and middle schools would give students time off until Feb. 15.Bandırma Health Group President Zafer Yılmaz noted the ongoing water problems in a statement during the meeting, saying that following strong rains which filled the Gönen Dam, the pipeline carrying water from the dam had malfunctioned as it had done in the past, leading to the on-and-off water supply in Bandırma.
District Mayor Mantı said: “Many of the educational establishments in the district don’t have water tanks. The regional administration is working without pause to fix the problem preventing water from being delivered. During this period, we want to avoid our students contracting any illnesses that arise from a lack of water and so made the decision to let the schools out on break.”
The water shortage has, of course, created serious problems, with water being transported by tanker from neighboring districts to meet the massive water needs of state hospitals alone, with some private establishments such as hotels and apartment complexes also making arrangements to bring in water for basic needs from nearby areas.
News reports say the water trouble in Bandırma is attributable to a rupture in one or more of the pipes delivering water from the Gönen district to Bandırma.
