In Spain, La Liga leader Barcelona is five points clear of Real Madrid, beating Getafe 2-1 despite having two players sent off. Leader Barcelona had Gerard Pique and Rafael Marquez sent off but still managed to beat Getafe 2-1 at home to remain five points clear of chasing Real Madrid.
Real swept aside Espanyol 3-0 with goals from Sergio Ramos, Kaka and the fit again Gonzalo Higuain. Manuel Pellegrini’s side is eight points ahead of third-placed Valencia, which beat Real Valladolid 2-0 at home.
Chelsea maintained its push for the English Premier League title and probably ended Arsenal’s interest in it as two first-half goals by Didier Drogba earned a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea tops the standings on 58 points, two clear of Manchester United which thrashed bottom club Portsmouth 5-0, helped by a remarkable three own goals.

Liverpool is now only five points adrift in fourth after beating city rival Everton 1-0 despite playing more than half the spiteful Anfield derby game with 10 men. Liverpool visits Arsenal on Wednesday, when Chelsea and Manchester United are also in action.
Girondins Bordeaux, which stumbled to a 4-2 loss at Stade Rennes, had its lead at the top of the French Ligue 1 cut to three points after Montpellier won 2-0 at struggler Boulogne.
A goal after three minutes by Sylvain Marveaux, a penalty by Jimmy Briand and then a fine strike by Ismael Bangoura just after the break gave Rennes a comfortable lead before Bordeaux fought back with goals from Yoan Gouffran and Brazilian Wendel.
