4300 people die nationwide in traffic accidents in 2009

4,300 people died and 200,000 were injured in nearly 300,000 accidents nation wide in 2009.

Data compiled from Police Department Figures revealed that 3,393 fatal accidents occurred in 2009, 17,513 more causing injuries, 188,663 others resulting in financial losses.

Traffic accidents caused a total of 980.2 million TL (USD 644.8 million) in financial losses.

Accidents recorded under a new regulation allowing drivers involved in accidents without casualties to agree among themselves with an accident report are not taken into account in the figures above.

According to data compiled from Turkey's Trafic Insurance Database, 745,964 accidents were recorded under this category.

İstanbul ranked 1st  once again in number of accidents.

50,257 traffic accidents occurred in İstanbul in 2009, killing 241 people and injuring 50,257 others.

A total of 8.8 million traffic fines were issued by traffic units in 2009.
