German dentist sparks debate by refusing to treat boy called Jihad

8 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A German dentist sparked a controversy last week when she refused to see her next patient upon learning that his name was Cihad (the Turkish version of Jihad), stating that she considered his name a declaration of war on non-Muslims and sending him away.

The 16-year-old teenager, Cihad Çelik, had gone to the orthodontist to have his braces adjusted but was turned away when the dentist reportedly said she considered his name a declaration of war on non-Muslims.

The boy’s family, in Donaueschingen, may ask police to charge the woman with discrimination over the alleged incident, which took place on Tuesday.

The orthodontist later told the Schwarzwaelder Boten, a newspaper in southern Germany, that she later regretted her decision because “it’s not the boy’s fault what name his parents gave him.”

The boy had been undergoing teeth-straightening treatment for two years at the same practice but with a different orthodontist, who had been absent on the day in question.

The father said he was astonished that anyone could object to his boy. “His name has never been a problem before,” he said. Earlier he told the newspaper the parents chose the name 16 years ago because it sounded nice, not out of any Islamist motivation.

German officials were trying to bring the dentist and the Çelik family together and convince the family not to file a case against the dentist.

A researcher from Berlin, Wolfgang Benz, said the incident was an indication of the rising hatred against Muslims in Europe.
