Canaries to show Diyar downside of professional soccer

Semih Şentürk will lead the Fener attack today.

The Fenerbahçe Yellow Canaries, fresh from their triumph over the Bursaspor Green Crocs in their Ziraat Turkish Cup quarterfinal match at İstanbul’s Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium on Thursday night, return to the same venue this evening where they will be entertaining struggling southeastern side Diyarbakırspor in week 20 of the Turkcell Super League.
The fleet-footed Canaries, without the slightest doubt, are the odds-on favorites against tiny Diyar -- a team operating on a shoestring budget and currently facing serious financial hardship.

The Canaries are in a buoyant mood after crushing the Sivasspor Yiğidolar 5-1 away last Sunday in the league and Bursaspor 3-0 in the cup on Thursday. The results mean the free-scoring Canaries have netted eight goals in their last two matches, while conceding only one. This, indeed, is championship form.

The Canaries, with 43 points from 19 matches, will strive to win by a bagful of goals this evening and consolidate their lead.

Pity poor Diyar

It may be mission impossible for relegation-bound Diyabakırspor, beaten 2-1 at home by the Trabzonspor Black Sea Storm last Saturday, to draw with the Canaries at Şükrü Saracoğlu this evening, let alone win.

Like most minnows against quality opposition, Diyabakırspor will definitely resort to catenaccio. In other words, the southeastern side will be at Şükrü Saracoğlu not to wing but to do everything humanly possible to prevent the Canaries from playing.

And we are very likely to see Diyabakırspor pack its midfield and defense with 10 men in a desperate bid to contain the Fener onslaught.

Elsewhere today the Bursaspor Green Crocs, currently third, will try to bounce back in the league following their cup debacle on Wednesday when they take on big-spending Ankaragücü in the capital today. Victory over Ankara will be a much-needed morale booster for Buraspor ahead of their do-or-die second-leg quarterfinal home match against Fenerbahçe next week. Another game of interest pits the resurging Black Sea Storm against Manisaspor.

On Friday night, defending champion Beşiktaş beat visiting Gençlerbirliği 4-1 in the week 20 opener at İstanbul’s İnönü Stadium.
