THY to purchase 35 Boeing airplanes

5 February 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s flag carrier, Turkish Airlines (THY), has announced that it will add 35 more Boeing 737 airplanes to its fleet, with 20 of these jets certain to be purchased while 15 are optional.

In a written announcement released yesterday, THY said the decision is in line with an earlier decision of the airline’s Board of Directors, stating that the 105 airplanes will be added to the fleet, with 30 of said jets optional. The airplanes will be Boeing 737-800 and 737-900 ER.

THY’s fleet is expected to reach a total of 196 aircraft by the end of 2015, with 155 of them single-aisle jets, 36 twin-aisle aircraft and five cargo planes, the statement read.

Established in 1933, THY, which is a Star Alliance member, increased its number of aircraft from five to its present 124. The airline currently flies to 37 points within the country and 156 points worldwide.
