Efes downs Montepaschi to stay alive in Top 16

Knowing that it needed victory to boost its qualifying chances in Game Two of the Euroleague Top 16, Turkish champion Efes Pilsen did exactly that -- outclassing, outplaying and outscoring Italian outfit Montepaschi Siena 88-78 in an action-packed encounter at the Abdi İpekçi Sports Arena in İstanbul on Wednesday night.

Having been beaten 77-70 on the road by Spain’s Real Madrid in their Top 16 Group F opener last Wednesday, Efes knew there was no longer any room for error. And so the İstanbul side defended well and banged in the three pointers right from the very beginning.

And it was no surprise whatsoever that Efes led by a wide 27-17 at the end of the first quarter, 45-34 at the end of the second, 67-52 at the end of the third before easily sweeping aside the Italians in the final and last quarter for a commanding 88-78 victory.

Montepaschi Siena’s Central African Republic small forward Romain Sato was the overall top scorer with 19 points, but that was far too little to stop the rampaging Efes from doing what was expected from it. Croatian center Mario Kasun led the Turkish champion with 17 points.

In other Euroleague Top 16 matches it was: Partizan 67, Regal FC Barcelona 66; Zalgiris 68, CSKA Moscow 83; Unicaja 50, Asseco Prokom 70; and Olympiakos 87, BC Khimki 69
